Three Neurotoxin Products Used to Treat Wrinkles

There are currently three neurotoxin products on the market: Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin. These are all forms of neurotoxins that your medical professional injects to relax the muscles that are making unwanted wrinkles and facial expressions. These toxins are also effective treatments for decreasing sweating in certain areas of the body. Here, I’ll give you a quick overview of the four different neurotoxins available. Botox was introduced in 1977 as a treatment for people with weak eye muscles. It quickly became widely known as a treatment for lines and wrinkles, becoming the foremost neurotoxin in the market, and the most widely recognized brand. Botox is made by Allergan in the USA and is FDA approved to treat a range of cosmetic issues, including glabellar lines, forehead wrinkles, and crow’s feet. It has recently also been approved for other treatments, including for chronic migraines. Botox is the oldest neurotoxin on the market, and therefore there is a lot of literature and research available to support its use and results. Dysport comes from Galderma, a Swiss company. Dysport’s unique quality is that is able to spread over a wider surface area. This makes it particularly effective for use on larger areas, such as the forehead. This is one reason why Dysport is often preferred by many male patients. It is 2.7 times stronger than other botulinum toxins so you can use less, which can make it cheaper.  Treatment results have been reported within 24 hours of injection.

Xeomin is manufactured by Merz, a German company. Although uncommon, your body can develop antibodies that block a neurotoxin’s effects. Xeomin contains peptides and has no protein, which makes it more difficult for your body to develop immunity to the neurotoxin. This is the unique benefit of this product. Xeomin is particularly effective for people who no longer seem to attain their desired effects from using other neurotoxins. 

ONSET OF ACTION

Botox: 3-5 days 

Dysport: Within 24 hours 

Xeomin: 5-7 days (to be fair, we have seen this working in just a few hours)

All neurotoxins should last for approximately 3-4 months, sometimes longer. This is the period of time on average that it takes your muscles to regain movement. Regularly scheduled treatments are important for optimal results.

CONCLUSION

No single neurotoxin product is the best for every treatment and for every person. Dysport or Xeomin may be more effective for some people, while Botox may work better for others. All three neurotoxins are produced by leading pharmaceutical companies. BOTOX is a prescription medicine containing 100 units of Clostridium Botulinum Type A toxin complex for injection. It is used for the treatment of severe frown lines and associated ‘crow’s feet’ around the eyes. It should be administered only by trained medical professionals. Talk to your specialists about the benefits/risks of this procedure in appearance medicine. Cautions: people with neuro-muscular transmission disorders, presence of infection at the site of injection, pregnancy and lactation. Possible side effects include headaches, pain, burning sensation or redness at the injection site, temporary local muscle weakness including eyelid droop, decreased sensation and nausea. Xeomin® is a Prescription Medicine containing 50, 100 LD50 Units of clostridium botulinum Type A toxin complex for injection. It is used for the treatment of frown lines on the forehead in adults. It should be administered only by trained medical professionals. Talk to your specialist about the benefits/risks of this procedure in appearance medicine. Xeomin treatment lasts about four months and further courses of treatment may be necessary.

Cautions: Generalised disorders of muscle activity; Infection or inflammation at the proposed injection sites, pregnancy and lactation. Possible side effects: headache, pain, swelling or infection at the injection site, local muscle weakness including drooping eyelids, lack of feeling & nausea. You will need to pay for this medicine.
